Distribution lines, called feeders, take power from each substation and route it to every neighborhood. Feeders are most often built on wooden poles, as shown in Figure 1.1 and carry from one to four wires depending on the voltage, type, and amount of power they are designed to carry. At periodic locations along each feeder, service transformers further reduce power to the voltage level actually used in offices and homes, and service lines from that transformer route it into those office buildings, stores, and houses.
